Last night my Plus one and I attended an amazing New Year Banquet at The Ulster Museum.

It was in recognition of the hard work by all involved in the NI Year of Food and Drink. The evening kicked off in the ground floor of the museum with a drinks and canapé reception before a speech or two.

We then made our way to the "heavens" to truly have our taste sensations challenged and satiated. The main course was the beef shin which was the NI alternative Signature dish which was recently introduced at St Georges Market. As we do not eat beef we had the same dish but with a nut cutlet and it was amazing!!

The starters, tastes, presentations and quantities were absolutely perfect and really was an amazing reflection on what we can do in NI. Thanks to Stephen from The Yellow Door and his gang for a fantastic banquet.

The venue was totally awesome and the "craic" was fabulous. Great meeting up with old mates and new. Pity about the lighting-too purple!!!!! Can't wait for the awards ceremony!!

Yellow Door cafe within the Ulster Museum serves some seriously delicious fodder. Renowned for their fabulous Yellow Door breads I couldn't resist treating myself today to an indulgently devine croque madame. It was an amazing grilled cheese and bechamel sauce delight of a toasted sandwich filled with goats cheese and spinach. Served with an uber fresh dressed salad and creamy luxury potato salad. I completely forgot my diet! There's a great range on offer here - sandwiches, baked potatoes, soups, tray bakes, hot dishes (a tagine today), crumbles, pastries - all made by Yellow Door themselves. Plus a range of wines and beers can be purchased. Due to being located within Ulster Museum the cafe is fresh, bright and relaxed with a full glass wall overlooking Botanic Gardens. Yellow Door can be extremely busy between 1 and 2pm so an early or late lunch is advisable. Follow your lunch up with a walk around the Museum and Botanic Gardens - and you've got the perfect day out...

Ok for tea and coffee. Hot food was very poor and probably the worse attempt at a burger in Belfast. Used to be brilliant but now is just canteen type food.

I'm a bit of a fan of a museum cafe, as any day out is always enhanced by a little coffee and bun break. In this case we found ourselves in the area and Maggie Mays being queued out the door we decided to give the Yellow Door in the Ulster Museum a try.

Bright and airy with lovely big windows overlooking Botanic Gardens, it is easy to be distracted by the location and be gentler on the food. Perhaps the big windows mean they can see your purse coming, as for a light lunch this place is a little spendy. You order at a reasonably well laid out counter with a selection of your usual lunch type mularky as sandwiches, soup, perhaps a baked potato. Having the produce looking sadly at you like a puppy in a pound wanting a home did make me wonder how long they had been sitting there, but we ordered a soup and a toastie and were sent off to our seats and told they'd be brought out. On arrival I can't deny what we got wasn't tasty, it was. It just lacked a little something, like perhaps care. My toasty came all lonely on a plate. I could have paid extra for some salad, fair enough, but a little garnish or care in presentation wouldn't have gone amis. My friend did enjoy his soup, but did feel a little ripped off considering it was only a bowl of soup and a fizzy orange was over 6 quid.

In all I would say it is a brilliant location so fair enough with the prices, but like life it is amazing how much more goodwill you can get with a little added finesse.
